WHAT ARE INTERNAL MARTIAL ARTS? “Internal” strength refers to the intrinsic strengths and abilities of the human body. Internal power arises from the natural elasticity of tendons and ligaments, the intrinsic flexibility of relaxed muscle tissue, and the rock-like rigidity of a well-aligned skeletal structure, NOT ordinary muscular strength. It is developed by cultivating a deeply meditative state while moving and interacting with the environment to integrate the movements of the different parts of the body in the most harmonious, efficient manner. Working in alignment with the inherent strengths of your body makes it possible to develop almost unlimited, seemingly effortless power. The most commonly known internal styles are tai chi chuan (from China) and aikido (from Japan). WHO CAN BENEFIT? Since our bodies are to a large degree made of the same stuff and have the same physical properties, anybody can benefit from studying the internal martial arts who has the desire regardless of perceived limitations. I have personally known practitioners of advanced age or with physical disabilities that have continued to progress in the face of what some might consider to be “limitations”. Likewise, those blessed with youth, strength, and vitality can also amaze themselves by discovering that their bodies have capabilities far beyond what they had imagined. I do not teach a particular style or discipline but rather universal principles of meditation, combat, and effortless power that can be utilized by anyone regardless of prior ability.
